Passionate about all things Caribbean!

A Letter from London

Thinking about Haiti non stop. Just thinking, thinking, thinking. What is the future of this island? Does this island have a future?

The statistics from Tuesday’s devastating earthquake are horrendous.

50,000 feared dead. Bodies lying in the streets. Heart wrenching and desperate in every sense of the word as  this earthquake is the last thing this Caribbean island needs. Tens of thousands of children killed, their bodies still trapped in the rubble.

I’ve heard aid workers say a huge start is simply having a tent to sleep, and a spare sheet to put over any body lying in the street

But Aid is pouring in. From the big global donors and from ordinary citizens all over the world. Emergency supplies are on their way and the British government has pledged 10 million dollars.

President Obama to make a live statement in a few hours.

But I guess the immediate response will be sufficient. It is the longer term reconstruction that will be the challenge in a poverty stricken country with a long history of difficulties.
